Taking on a new unit, refitting, or dealing with ageing wiring? Here's what to consider.

Signs the wiring needs work

  • An EICR with C1 or C2 items, or marked unsatisfactory
  • Old distribution boards or wiring, or no records of the installation
  • Frequent tripping, or not enough capacity for current equipment
  • A change of use or layout, such as a new office plan or shop fit-out

Planning around your business

Commercial rewires can often be phased area by area to keep you trading. Agree the programme and access before work starts.

Standards and paperwork

Work is designed, installed and tested to BS 7671, and you'll receive an electrical installation certificate. Keeping your system safe is part of your duty under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.

Safety first

Don't let staff or other trades work near exposed or temporary wiring. Make sure circuits are isolated and labelled during works.

Steve already carries out commercial repairs and installations for shops, offices and units: see services.

When to call an electrician
  • Your report says the wiring needs replacing
  • You're refitting or changing the layout
  • You're taking on premises with no electrical records
